Emily’s upcoming debut, Growing Girl: Searching for God, Finding Myself, is a brutally honest, often amusing, and always encouraging chronicle of a journey from alcoholism to all-in faith to atheism and back to a fragile, new, and beautiful spirituality.

Emily was a people pleasing, polite wife and mother—always agreeable and going along to get along. After a dark period of depression and alcoholism, she tried–and failed–to do enough good works to atone for all of her mistakes. Then a series of events converged, including the loss of both parents within a month of graduating seminary, that caused her firm and certain faith foundation to crumble. She thought she was done with Christianity…but it was not done with her. All of the sudden her eyes were open to different expressions of faith and the harm that was being done in the church she had devoted her life to. In the years following, she struggled to find her voice and help make a difference for those who no longer felt they belonged in the traditional church as well as those who were being actively harmed by the fundamentalist beliefs of others.

Howard is a bright new voice in the progressive Christian space and Growing Girl paints a picture of hope: hope that even after things fall apart, something new and beautiful can emerge if we are open enough to see it.
